Government of PakistanNawaz, PML-N paying price for standing by constitution, democracy: Rasheed

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Central Information Secretary Senator Pervaiz Rasheed on Monday said PML-N had always tried for supremacy of the constitution and democracy, and were paying price for that endeavor.

Talking to media in Islamabad, Pervaiz Rasheed said the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and PML-N were paying the price for supremacy of the constitution and democracy.

“It has been our bad luck that power rests with somebody and authority is exercised by others. Today it has become ample clear that who is exercising authority,” he said.

Earlier in the morning, Nawaz Sharif appeared before an accountability court; however, the ministers and PML-N leaders including the Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal were not allowed to enter the Court premises surrounded by Rangers personnel. The situation caused resentment as the interior minister also threatened to resign over Rangers deployment outside the Court without government’s permission.

Later Rangers Sector Brigadier Asif Iqbal visited the accountability court and held negotiation with the PML-N leadership. He said such stringent arrangements had been carried out over security threats, and added no one was barred from entering the accountability court.

Pervaiz Rasheed said the thrice elected prime minister was appearing before the court and the court had been converted into a ‘closed court’ despite that the trial was declared by the court as an open trial.

“It is not an open trial. It is a hijacked trial,” he said when was asked whether he thought if it was an open trial as had been declared by the court to be kept open.

The former information minister said Nawaz Sharif appeared before the court that manifest that he respected the law of the land and the courts.

“Today people can see that an elected former prime minister is appearing before the court and a dictator Pervez Musharraf has absconded from the country,” Pervaiz Rasheed said.
