ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Mukhtar Ahmad on Wednesday said that the commission will initiate its vision 2025 from next month.
Addressing a press conference at HEC Secretariat in Islamabad, he said that HEC would start new educational programmes according to the international standards.
He said the country had a total of 41000 faculty members in the higher educational institutions, adding out of which only 11000 were Phd holders. “We are in dire need of 30,000 more Phd’s degree holders, currently” he informed.
Chairman HEC said that since 2002 the commission had awarded scholarships to more than 200,000 students in different categories.
HEC, he said, has formulated a committee which will carry out periodic review of the issues regarding sub-campuses and affiliated colleges with the universities in two phases.
He said University of Sargodha had already cancelled the affiliation of more than 30 colleges, adding, the issues of Lahore campus of the Baha ud Din Zikria University would also be resolved.
During the quality checking review it had been observed that many universities did not follow the rule in setting up their sub-campuses.
Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that after granting the Non Objection Certificate (NOC), the concerned universities would be put two reviews-soft and hard during two and five years respectively.
He said HEC has signed contracts with Pakistan Medical Dental Council (PMDC) and other relevant councils to pay joint visit prior to awarding provisional NOC.
He said the HEC received total of 198 complaints of plagiarism since 2006, adding 38 cases were blacklisted and 6 cases were pending in courts.
He said, HEC had so far reviewed 293 programs of the M.Phil and PhD in different universities and during last one year 31 PhD and 26 M.Phil programs were closed.
He said HEC would set up sub-campuses of the universities throughout the country, including 11 in Balochistan, KPK 5, Punjab 6, Sindh 6, G-B, 3 in first phase.
Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that the present government has doubled the budget of HEC which had improved its performance manifold.
