Hollywood: Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy of Pakistan wins her second Oscar Academy Award (Oscar) for the second time for her Documentary Short Film on ‪A Girl in the River‬ –The Price of Forgiveness.

She bagged award at the 88th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

According to plot, a woman in Pakistan sentenced to death for falling in love becomes a rare survivor of the country’s harsh judicial system. She got Oscar for the category of Documentary Short.

According to her profile on Wikipedia, Pakistan born Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy was born on 12 November 1978 in Karachi Pakistan.  Her Oscar win for Best Documentary for Saving Face made her the first Pakistani to win an Academy Award. She is also the first non-American to win the Livingston Award for Young Journalists. She is one of only eleven female directors who have ever won 2 Oscars for a non-fiction film.

After graduating from Stanford University, she launched her career as a filmmaker with her first film Terror’s Children for the The New York Times. Her films include Children of the Taliban, The Lost Generation (about Iraqi exiles), Afghanistan Unveiled and the Academy Award-winning Saving Face. In 2016 she won an Oscar for her film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. Her visual contributions have earned her numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary (2012), and the Emmy Award (2011) and the One World Media Award for Broadcast Journalist of the Year (2007). Her films have been aired on PBS, CNN, the Discovery Channel, Al Jazeera English and Channel 4.

Prime Minister of her native country Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif has congratulated her for second Oscar award.

While Federal Minister of Pakistan for media and television related ministry that is known as ministry for Information and Broadcasting Senator Pervaiz Rashid said that Sharmin Obaid Chinoy has become a pride of Pakistan by winning Oscar award for 2nd time. “The award is a recognition of her talent and her deep commitment against injustice and oppression against women. I congratulate her for winnig the Oscar again and hope that she would continue her good work in times to come”, senator added.
