ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Chairperson National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Rozina Alam Khan said the Commission has planned to set up 12,000 new literacy centers in backward and far-flung areas of the country.

Talking to media men here on Wednesday, she said the new literacy centers will be part of government efforts to increase literary rate to 90 percent in the country by 2025.

The project has been finalized and it will be implemented on a fast track basis, she added.

She said according to the relevant Senate Standing Committee it should be ensured that people living in far-flung and backward areas of the country should get access to informal education and adult literacy centers.

According to annual report on education, the National Commission is functional in 143 districts of the country and has played an important role in increasing attendance in schools and reducing drop-out rates, she noted.

Rozina said an institute will be established to increase literacy rate in Islamabad. The institute will also give training to teachers associated with adult literacy.

Literacy centers will also be established in religious seminaries.

She further said special training programmes will be launched for literacy among taxi drivers, gardeners and labourers.

She told that NCHD would also prepare material for expanding non-formal education and for skills improvement among unemployed youth.

Rozina said the Commission is in touch with relevant organizations so that educational opportunities for people could be increased and positive change is brought in lives of people.

NCHD is the most prominent among institutions striving to end illiteracy, she said adding education is the best way to raise standard of living and create job opportunities for citizens.

Rozina said the Commission has adopted inexpensive, unique and modern ways to augment efforts for human resource development in government organizations.

She stressed that Pakistanis should get united to play their positive role in increasing literacy and emerge as a well-educated nation.

It is unfortunate that the country not only lags behind the region but the world in education sector, adding, “We cannot become a respectable nation without rectifying this unfortunate situation.”
