MOSCOW: The upper chamber of the Russian parliament on Wednesday revoked the right of military intervention in Ukraine, a day after the country’s President Vladimir Putin asked it to do so.

Out of 154 members of the Russian Federation Council 153 supported repealing the law which had authorised Putin in March to use military force in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Putin asked the council to cancel a legislation that would allow him to deploy forces into Ukraine.

“In the aim of normalizing the atmosphere and resolving the situation in the eastern regions of Ukraine and also in connection with the start of three-way negotiations on this issue, a request was sent to the Federation Council to cancel the resolution,” Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko also praised Putin’s decision, saying the move marks the “first practical step” towards settling the crisis in the east.
