Middle EastUS President urges Morsi to respond to demonstrators

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has urged Egyptian President Muhammed Morsi to respond to issues raised by hundreds of thousands of protesters who have called for the Islamist leader to be removed from office, the White House said on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by the White House, Obama “told President Morsi in a telephone conversation on Monday that the United States is committed to the democratic process in Egypt and does not support any single party or group.”

“President Obama encouraged President Morsi to take steps to show that he is responsive to their concerns, and underscored that the current crisis can only be resolved through a political process,” it said in a statement.
