Coronavirus home remedies

Looking after yourself at home

Just  like the infections caused by other viruses such as colds and flu, taking it easy and looking after yourself are essential to your recovery. For this purpose you should:

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Drink enough water so that your pee is a pale, clear colour. Avoid alcohol as this will make you more dehydrated.
  • Get plenty of rest. You should isolate yourself at home if you have any symptoms of coronavirus and avoid any energetic activity while you are unwell.
  • Use over-the-counter medicines to treat some of your symptoms.

Medications to be used

Unfortunately, there is no medication prepared for curing COVID-19 yet however there are some medications which assist in managing the infection properly and to help reduce the symptoms until you recover.

It has been observed that around 80 % of the patients hae mild infection which can be treated at home In this case, you should self-isolate for at least one week until you have recovered in order to stop the spreading of this viral infection.

As per the experts, every one in five people who contract COVID-19 will require hospital care. Around 15% of cases experience a severe infection requiring oxygen to help with respiratory symptoms. 5% experience critical infections, requiring ventilation. Those at a higher risk of severe or critical infections include older people and those with underlying health conditions.

How Do Painkillers work?

To relieve pain and fever, you can use painkillers like paracetamol. In a recent statement, France’s health minister, Olivier Véran, said that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) could intensify the infection. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, among others. So be careful in this regard.

However, as of now, there is no conclusive evidence that NSAIDs will make a coronavirus infection worse but until there is more information available, you should stick to other painkillers to treat a fever or headache. Anti-inflammatory drugs dampen the immune system which may make it more difficult for the body to recover. However, if you have been prescribed an NSAID to treat a health condition, you should continue to take it until you are told not to.

Other Treatments

There are some of the medications and treatments you might use to treat colds and flu will also help with coronavirus symptoms. Cough medicines or suppressants can help reduce your cough. Throat lozenges and remedies like honey and lemon may improve a sore throat.

Antibiotics

If you are thinking about taking antibiotics as the treatment for coronavirus, don’t go for it. These antibiotics will not improve your condition troubled by coronavirus.

Antibacterial hand washes (unless they’re also labelled as antiviral), cleaning products and hand sanitisers also won’t be effective in killing the virus on surfaces or your hands for the same reasons.

What are the Traditional Remedies to be used?

There are many natural herbal remedy ideas circulating around the internet but there is no proper information regarding treating the infection caused by coronavirus yet. So don’t be fooled by the ‘miracle’ treatments some people are trying to sell.

When to seek medical attention

If your illness is getting worse or your symptoms haven’t improved after seven days, you should seek medical assistance as soon as possible. If there is an emergency and you need an ambulance so call right away without any delay. If you have confirmation about suffering from COVID-19, cancel any routine medical or dental appointments which you had previously booked till the time you recover completely.
