ISLAMABAD: The Council of Common Interest (CCI) on Wednesday approved the new five-year national energy policy; the policy envisages completely ending load shedding in the country by 2017.

A meeting of the CCI with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the chair was held in Islamabad on Wednesday that deliberated on the five-year energy policy and later approved it.

The five-year energy policy envisages completely ending load shedding in the country by 2017.

The policy focuses on exploitation of cheap sources of energy including coal‚ hydel‚ solar and wind to overcome the electricity shortage.

Moreover, the policy envisages production of 7,000 megawatt electricity through coal.

The chief ministers of all the four provinces, Federal Finance Minister, Ishaq Dar and other concerned ministers attended the meeting.

Prior to the CCI meeting, the prime minister had a separate meeting with the four chief ministers. He exchanged views of country’s political and law and order situations obtaining in the provinces, while the new power policy also came under discussion.
