Four prisoners including Nanga Parbat attack accused flee from Gilgit jail

GILGIT, Pakistan: Four prisoners tried to escape from the Gilgit District Jail on Friday morning; however, one was killed and another injured by police firing while two of them succeeded to flee.

The killed prisoner and another who successfully managed to escape were accused of killing 10 foreigners at Nanga Parbat in 2013.

Following the incident, the security forces cordoned off the area as well as launched a search operation in Gilgit and adjoining areas to nab the fled prisoners.

Meanwhile, three jail officials including the jail warden were suspended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Zafar Iqbal Awan over the incident.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Secretary Sikandar Sultan Raja confirmed the incident, saying that one suspect involved in the Nanga Parbat massacre had managed to escape while another suspect in the case was killed by police firing.

The chief secretary said that the other two prisoners, one of whom managed to escape while the other was wounded, had no connection with the Nanga Parbat attack.

On June 22, 2013, gunmen wearing the uniform of paramilitary Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts stormed into the base camp of Nanga Parbat and killed 10 foreign climbers as well as a local guide.
