RAWALPINDI: At least four persons including a police sub-inspector were killed and 17 others injured in a suicide blast that occurred near an Imambargah in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, prompting a strong condemnation by the Shia Ulema Council.
The City Police Office (CPO) in Rawalpindi said that a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle exploded his explosives when he was stopped at a check post outside an Imambargah in Gracy Line area near airport in Rawalpindi.
The sources said several vehicles and shops were also damaged in the blast.
Police reached the scene and cordoned off the area, while the injured persons which included four policemen were shifted to Benazir Bhutto hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, an emergency was declared at hospitals in Rawalpindi in the aftermath of the explosion.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the Shia Ulema Council strongly condemned the suicide blast near Imambargah in Rawalpindi.
The Chief Minister directed the authorities concerned to provide best possible medical treatment to the injured.
