Middle EastSyria seeks UN help against US-led aggression

UNITED NATIONS: Syria said on Monday that the United Nations should try to prevent any aggression against it and asked the world body to help find a peaceful political solution to the crises in the country.

In a letter to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday, Syria’s ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari called for UN intervention.

“The Syrian government calls on the UN Secretary-General to assume his responsibilities … and to make efforts to prevent any aggression against Syria,” Jaafari wrote in the letter.

The Syrian ambassador also urged the United Nations to help find a peaceful political solution to the 30-month-long crisis in Syria.

Jaafari again denied the reports that the Syrian government was involved in a deadly chemical attack in east Damascus on August 21 that killed hundreds of people.

“The Syrian government repeats once again that it has never used chemical weapons,” he said.

In a statement in Beijing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that his country is highly concerned about any use of chemical weapons.

The spokesman said any action must be taken under UN Charter and the basic principles underlying in the international relations.

On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the information provided by the US to Moscow to prove that the Syrian regime was behind an alleged chemical weapons attacks is absolutely unconvincing.

The French government has said it will hand over its own evidence to lawmakers on Monday‚ linking the Syrian regime to the attack. The French parliament is due to debate the issue on Wednesday.
