AfghanistanSushmita Banerjee’s killers arrested in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL: Two militants belonging to Haqqani network have been arrested over the killing of Sushmita Banerjee, an Indian writer who authored a best-selling book about her dramatic escape from the Taliban in 1995, in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province late Monday, an official said on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old Banerjee was shot dead last week as Taliban militants arrived at her house in Sharana, the capital of Paktika province, tied up her husband and other members of the family, took Banerjee out and shot her.

“Police have arrested two people who have confessed to killing her,” Paktika governor spokesman Mokhlis Afghan told a foreign news agency.

“They have said in their confession that they were ordered to kill the lady because the film that was made from her book was an insult to the Taliban,” Afghan said.

“They also said she had Internet in her house and was spying for India,” he added.

The Taliban last week denied involvement in her murder.
