The following story was posted prior to the begining of first ODI between Pakistan and West Indies on April 7, 2017

Following the T20 series, Pakistan and West Indies will set off for ODIs journey with the first match at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Friday, another three-match series whose result will ensure one’s direct entrance into the 2019 World Cup.

Former World Champions, both Pakistan and West Indies haven’t been performing well in ODIs for a while now – for which they may have to pay the price in the shape of missing the direct qualification.

Whether 8th ranked Pakistan whitewashes 9th ranked West Indies or win the ODI series 2-1, it will most likely to directly qualify for World Cup in England; however, if the Host thrashes Pakistan 3-0, the visitors will then have to go through the qualifying round.

If Pakistan succeeds to beat West Indies 3-0, it will jump to 7th rank replacing Bangladesh. Though both the Asian Teams will have 92 Points each but Bangladesh will slip to 8th rank.ICC ODI rankings

So far, Pakistan and West Indies have been face-to-face in 16 ODI series, out of which Pakistan won 9, lost 6 while one ended in a draw. Likewise, out of a total of 131 ODIs, Pakistan won 58 while it had to suffer defeat in 70 matches. Three ODIs between the two sides didn’t produce any result.

The Second ODI between Pakistan and West Indies will take place on April 9 whereas the third ODI will be on April 11.

Earlier in the four-match T20 series, Pakistan beaten West Indies by 3-1.
