BANGALORE: A thrusting Jamaican left-hander, Chris Gayle, set a new record of highest individual score in the history of T20 cricket as he scored an incredible 175 off a mere 66 balls against Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday, surpassing New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, who hit 158 off 73 balls against RCB at the same venue.

The 33-year-old Gayle also hit the fastest century in professional cricket by reaching 100 off 30 balls in the same match.

The 30-ball ton beats the previous 34-ball Twenty20 record set by Australia’s Andrew Symonds for Kent against Middlesex in 2004.

“I am at loss of words myself,” Gayle said. “It was a good wicket and I started really well. It is just one of those when you hit the ball it stays hit. Everything was coming out of the middle of the bat.”
