NOTTINGHAM: England have beaten Australia by 14 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Ashes series at the climax of a stunning encounter at Trent Bridge.

After a nervy start it was James Anderson who made the breakthrough, capturing the wicket of debutant Ashton Agar (14) who edged behind to captain Alastair Cook at first slip.

The trick was repeated on two further occasions as Mitchell Starc (1) and Peter Siddle (11) followed soon behind him.

And the victory was completed after the lunch break when Brad Haddin’s stoic innings ended after he edged behind, but was only given out after TV umpire Marais Erasmus reviewed an initial not out decision.
