PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police have made it mandatory to record the CNIC number and mobile numbers of the accused in the FIR index forms which are later incorporated into a central computerized database being maintained in the Central Police Office.

During last nine months, reportedly 113,044 accused were involved in various offences throughout the province out of which the antecedents containing CNIC numbers and mobile numbers of 106,201 accused have been recorded in the central base.

The Additional IGP Investigation gave an in-depth briefing to the Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani regarding the computerization of the criminal data here today. The digitization of police record including the antecedents of the criminals is of paramount significance.

This is one of the various spectra of the digitalization initiative taken by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police on larger perimeter. This data will comprise the digitized criminal record in line with the international best practices. This record has been made available to the supervisory officers.

Further, the police personnel deployed on the pickets and nakabandies also utilize this record through CRVS and IVS SIMs and android tablets for apprehending the absconders and proclaimed offenders.

Another striking feature is the hotspot policing which plays a foundational role in devising the strategy for crime prevention. It is based on the geo-tagging of the crime scenes.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police have been geo-tagging the crime scenes of heinous offences including terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, murder, dacoity, robbery, burglary etc. Reportedly, 4,440 crime scenes of murder, 519 crime scenes of IED attacks, 28 crime scenes of suicide and 735 crime scenes of offences against property have been geo-tagged since the year 2014.

The Additional IGP also briefed the IGP Nasir Durrani regarding the details of the cases pending investigation and trial. Reportedly, out of 29,420 cases registered in the year 2015, the investigation of 26,020 cases has been completed which amounts to 89 percent of the total. The remaining 3,400 cases include 2,035 cases of the last month.

On the other hand, a total of 29,311 cases are pending trial in the courts. These included 18,582 cases pending trial in the court for a period of more than one year, 7,864 cases pending trial in the court for a period of more than two years and 2,865 cases pending trial in the court for a period of more than three years.
