ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Election to the Office of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman is being held on Tuesday in the Senate Hall in Islamabad.
Announcing the Election Schedule, the Presiding Officer for the first Session Senator Ishaq Dar said that the duly filled nomination papers will be received by the Secretary Senate in his Office before 11:00 am today.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place at 11:15 am.
Yousuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) is poised to ascend to the coveted Senate Chairman position unopposed as his party has struck a power-sharing deal with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in this regard.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has decided to sit out of the elections for both Chairman and Deputy Chairman.
The Presiding Officer has adjourned the proceedings of the House till 12:30 pm.
Meanwhile, 41 newly elected Senators have taken Oath of office at the Parliament House in Islamabad amid a boycott by the PTI.
The Presiding Officer Ishaq Dar administered the oath.
The Presiding Officer felicitated the newly elected Senators. Later they signed the roll.
Almost a month ago, the Upper House of the Parliament became dysfunctional following the retirement of half of its members.
