ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The National Assembly was informed Tuesday that a proper mechanism was in place to properly dispose of waste materials of public sector hospitals of the capital city.

Responding to a calling attention notice, Parliamentary Secretary for Cabinet Javed Ikhlas informed the House that there are proper arrangements for burning and disposing of the infectious wastes in all the hospitals.

He informed the House that there are three big public sector hospitals including Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Polyclinic and National Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (NIRM).

The waste of two of these hospitals was being managed by government agencies while one of the hospitals was in agreement with private sector company to dispose of the waste.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that The Ministry of Climate Change and Capital Administration and Development Division (CAD) have been supervising to ensure that hospitals waster is properly burnt and disposed of.

He said that “we have also international obligations to dispose of this infectious material properly to save people from various diseases.”

To a question about management of hospital wastes in private sector hospitals, he informed the House that big private sector hospitals like Shifa International, have been managing to its waste material at their own.

As far as other clinics and hospitals are concerned, the Parliamentary Secretary said that CAD and Environmental Protection Agency have been closely monitoring to ensure cleanliness in the hospitals.

Earlier, MNAs, Shista Pervaiz and Farhana Qamar while raising the question of cleanliness in hospitals of the federal capital, expressed concern that the hospitals material was not disposed of properly.

They were of the view that some of the wastes was being stolen from its way to the dumping site for re-use in various clinics and hospitals.
