PoliticsImran Khan, Bushra Bibi acquitted in Iddat Case

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been acquitted in the Iddat Case.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka issued the short order on Saturday, while announcing the judgment in the Case, which stated that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi should be immediately released if they were not wanted in other cases.

“Complainant (Khawar Fareed Maneka) has failed to prove his Case against both the appellants (Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi). Accordingly, both the appeals filed by Appellants are accepted,” the written short order issued by the Court stated.

“Judgement of learned trial Court dated 03-02-2024 is set-aside and consequently both the appellants are acquitted of the charge,” the order added.

The court order also stated that “Learned Counsel of the respondent has strenuously argued that the complainant/respondent (Khawar Maneka) was deprived from the right of Rajow, so he was defrauded by the appellants. In cases examination the respondent deposed that on the second day of marriage of the appellants, he came to know of their marriage. It is surprising to note that he remained passive for about six years for his right of Rajow which period had already expired before the filing of this private complaint”.

Both Imran Khan and Burhra Bibi were sentenced to seven years in jail and slapped a fine of Rs 5,00,000 each in February 2024 by a Court that ruled their 2018 marriage broke the law.

Bushra Bibi was accused of not completing the waiting period mandated by Islam, called “Iddat,” after divorcing her previous husband Khawar Maneka and marrying Imran Khan.

The Iddat Case was one of the three Cases along with Toshakhana and Cipher Cases in which Imran Khan was awarded back-to-back imprisonments just a few day before the February 8 general elections.

Imran Khan had already been acquitted in the Cipher Case while his conviction in the Toshakhana Case was suspended as well.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
