Number of polio cases hits 187 after three more cases confirmed

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The number of polio victims in the country during the current year has reached 187 after three new polio cases were confirmed by the polio virology laboratory of the national institute of health.

An official of the national health services ministry said that three new polio cases have been reported from Bara tehsil of the Khyber tribal region.

As many as 130 polio cases have been reported from the volatile federally administered tribal areas (FATA).

Pakistan is among three countries where the crippling virus is endemic; the other two are Afghanistan and Nigeria.

In May, the Worth Health Organization (WHO) imposed strict travel restrictions on Pakistan due to increasing cases of polio in the country, making it mandatory for Pakistani citizens to carry a polio vaccination certificate during foreign travel.
