KARACHI, Pakistan: The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Rashid Godil has sustained critical injuries in a firing incident in Karachi on Tuesday.

The sources said that unknown gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on the vehicle of Rashid Godil in Bahadurabad area of Karachi which caused injuries to the MQM leader.

The MQM leader was rushed to the Liaqat National Hospital where according to sources, Rashid Godil received three bullets in his chest, neck and jaw. In the firing incident, Rashid Godil’s wife remained unhurt; however, his driver Abdul Mateen lost his life.

Rashid Godil initially underwent surgery at the hospital following which he was put on the ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The police said that nine culprits were involved in the firing incident and they were riding four motorcycles.

Rashid Godil was elected a member of National Assembly on a ticket of the MQM from Karachi’s NA-252 constituency in May 2013 general elections.

Meanwhile, the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah took notice of the incident and sought an immediate report from the Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police.  

The firing incident took place at a time when the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman was holding talks with the MQM leaders at the MQM headquarters Nine Zero, aiming to convince them to withdraw their resignations from the Parliament.

Last week, the MQM lawmakers tendered their resignations from the National Assembly, Senate and the Sindh Assembly as to express their reservations over the Rangers-led operation in Karachi.
