ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and all provincial governments to take immediate precautionary measures in view of the ongoing pre-monsoon spell.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the prime minister said that adequate emergency preparedness measures should be ensured throughout the Country so as to contain any potential damage to the minimum.

The prime minister also directed to keep the residents of vulnerable areas informed regarding emergency procedures and ensure timely evacuations, wherever needed.

Meanwhile, a fresh spell of widespread monsoon rains with a greater intensity has begun across the Country from today.

The Spokesman of the Met Office said that the monsoon has already made onset in the Country from Monday but isolated heavy falls are expected in Islamabad, Upper Punjab, Lower Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Eastern Balochistan and Kashmir today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday).

The Met Office spokesman said that the heavy falls may generate flash floods in the vulnerable areas particularly in Barsati Nullahs of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pothohar region, Gujranwala, Dera Ghazi Khan Divisions and Kashmir. He said that due to intermittent rains, there is also risk of landslides in hilly areas including Malakand and Hazara divisions, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

The spokesman advised all the concerned authorities to remain alert today and tomorrow in view of this weather advisory.
