Update Story

Millington Police Chief Rita Stanback said the shooter was apprehended Thursday by other National Guard members, and that he did not have the small handgun used in the shooting in his possession by the time officers arrived. Stanback said two National Guard members were shot, one in the foot and one in the leg.

Maj. Gen. Max Haston, Tennessee’s adjutant general, said at a news conference that the victims were being treated at a local hospital and he expected them to be released.

The Tennessee National Guard late Thursday identified those shot as Maj. William J. Crawford and Sgt. Maj. Ricky R. McKenzie. The shooter’s name has not been released.

Update story

MILLINGTON, TN -It is confirmed that at least two people have been shot on the Millington Navy Base United States.  Both victims are reported to be in non-critical condition. The base is currently on lock down, but the shooter is in custody. The incident took place at Tennessee Army National Guard Recruiting Center.  Multiple ambulances were on the scene.

Preliminary reports indicated that the event took place within the facility, but the Navy has now acknowledged that the shooting occurred offsite on naval property. Jason Miles, a reporter for WMC-TV, says the incident occurred in a “non-secured” area near the Naval Support Activity Mid-South base, close to Tennessee’s border with Arkansas and Mississippi.

Both victims are in non-critical condition, the Navy reports.

The identity of the shooter has not yet been identified, but the Associated Press reports a Navy recruiter relieved of duty earlier that day had been taken into custody, according to a law enforcement official who was briefed of the incident and spoke to the AP anonymously. West Memphis’ WREG-TV reported earlier that unnamed sources told them the shooter had just been fired, left and returned with a gun.
