EuropeTurkey to pay heavily for supporting rebels: Assad

ANKARA: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Friday warned that Turkey will ‘pay very dearly’ for backing rebels fighting to overthrow his regime.

In an interview with a Turkish television channel on Friday, the Syrian President said in the near future these terrorists will have an impact on Turkey, and Turkey will pay very dearly for its contribution.

Syria and Turkey were once close allies, but now their relations have deteriorated since a popular uprising erupted in March 2011 in Syria. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has been one of the most fervent supporters of the Syrian rebellion.

Assad also accused Turkish Prime Minister of lying about the situation in the Syria. “All that he says about Syria and its people is a heap of lies, that is all… Erdogan is doing nothing but supporting the terrorists,” Assad said.
