Egyptian court adjourns Morsi murder trial till February 1

CAIRO: An Egyptian court on Wednesday adjourned the trial of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi and 14 other defendants including former presidential aides and leaders of his Muslim Brotherhood movement till February 1, citing weather conditions.

Morsi, as the first democratically-elected president was ousted by the military on July 3 and is currently held in prison some 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, is accused of inciting the murder of protesters outside his presidential palace in December 2012.

The former president was scheduled to appear before the court set up inside a police academy outside the capital Cairo but he failed to arrive to the court due to bad weather.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out between the supporters of the ousted president and security forces in the Nasr City area of Cairo, as Morsi’s supporters were protesting his trial.

The protesters took to the streets following a call by an Islamist coalition led by the Muslim Brotherhood to gather in imposing marches on Wednesday at the beginning of the trial.

The Egyptian security forces tried to disperse the protesters by firing rubber bullets and tear gas at them that left several protesters injured.
