DAMASCUS: At least 1,62,000 people including at least 54,000 civilians have been killed in the ongoing three-year-old conflict in Syria, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday.

The observatory said that losses among fighters on the government side were higher than those among pro-rebel groups.

It estimated that those 62,800 killed included the army, pro-Assad Syrian militia, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters and other foreign Shi’ite gunmen while 42,700 people died on the rebel side including fighters from al Qaeda’s Nusra Front, other Islamist brigades and soldiers who defected from Assad’s army.

The observatory said that all sides in the conflict played down their losses.
