NEW DELHI: At least 109 persons were killed and 133 others injured when a stampede broke out at a religious gathering at Datia district in Madhya Pradesh state of India.

The incident occurred when Hindu pilgrims were crossing a bridge near the Ratangarh village temple in the Madhya Pradesh district of Datia where some 500,000 people had gone to honor the Hindu mother goddess Durga on the last day of the popular 10-day Navaratra festival.

In the stampede, many pilgrims were killed after leaping off the bridge in a bid to escape the panic sparked by fears that the structure was about to collapse.

The state has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.
