Cost of production of medicines in Pakistan
The Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination further told the House that the Maximum Retail Prices (MRPs) of drugs are fixed on the basis of reference prices under Drug Pricing Policy-2018 approved by the federal government.
It is not practicable to determine the cost of production of more than seventy thousand registered drugs for human use in different dosage forms and pack sizes.
The minister told that the cost of production may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer due to different sources of material and levels of GMP compliance.
Moreover, the cost of each medicine may vary from batch to batch due to variation in material prices fluctuation in Pak Rupees against US$, utilities prices, and the cost of overhead which make the estimation impossible.
