Ebola outbreak: Death toll reaches 4,033

GENEVA, Switzerland: A total of 4,033 people have been killed so far from the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola, according to the latest figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The UN health agency said that 4,033 people have died from Ebola as of October 8 out of a total of 8,399 registered cases in seven countries including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain and the United States.

The WHO said that Liberia has witnessed 2,316 deaths, Sierra Leone 930 and in Guinea 778 people have succumbed to the hemorrhagic fever.

Ebola is a form of hemorrhagic fever whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood, feces or sweat. It can also be spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.

It remains one of the world’s most virulent diseases which kills between 25 to 90 percent of those who fall sick.
