HealthCentre for Diseases Control established at NIH Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Centre for Diseases Control (CDC) has been established at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Islamabad in order to enhance the Country’s capacity in the field of national public health initiatives.

The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan along with the Chairman Health Task Force Pakistan Professor Nausherwan Khan Burki and the Chairman Board of Governors (BoG) of NIH Professor Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, and BoG members inaugurated the newly established Centre for Diseases Control at the NIH on Thursday.

The CDC  has been established at the NIH with an aim to enhance the capacity of the public health system in coordination, diseases detection, surveillance, response, preparedness and emergency management of public health events.

On this occasion, Dr. Faisal Sultan appreciated the momentous progress of the NIH and its role in the public health system of Pakistan.

The special assistant on health said that the new initiative will contribute to improve the ability of the Country to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks in a systematic manner and also enhance national health safety and security.

Speaking on occasion, the Executive Director NIH Major General Professor Aamer Ikram said, the center will improve the public health system capacity for early detection of events having public health significance for a timely response using modern methods and techniques.

On the sidelines of Bahrain International Airshow, Commander of Ninth Air Force (US Air Forces Central Command — AFCENT), Lieutenant General Derek France called on Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force. The Air Chief reiterated his resolve to further enhance the existing bilateral cooperation between the two strategic partners. Commander AFCENT appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in promoting regional peace and vowed to enhance cooperation in the fields of joint training, mutual exercises and military to military collaboration. In a separate meeting, Chief of the Air Staff also called on Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.
