ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahbaz sharif has expressed heartfelt condolences over the killing of the former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The 67-year-old Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who served as the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history, has been assassinated by a gunman during an election speech in western city of Nara.

“I extend my profound condolences over the sad demise of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,” Shahbaz Sharif in a Twitter statement on Friday.

The prime minister said that Shinzo Abe made invaluable contributions to the Pakistan-Japan relationship.

“Our prayers are with bereaved family. At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with the people of Japan,” he said.

Shinzo Abe was delivering a speech for the House of Councilors election near a train station when he was shot by an assailant. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

The police said that a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the shooting has been arrested.
