ISLAMABAD: The federal government and the opposition have accelerated their efforts regarding the appointment of Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after the Supreme Court’s order to appoint NAB chief at the earliest or be ready for consequences.

The Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said in an interview that the name of Chairman NAB will be finalized by September 21.

Shah, who is currently in London on a private visit‚ said that he will return to Pakistan on September 18 and will meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resolve the issue of the appointment of Chairman NAB.

Meanwhile, federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has made a telephonic contact with the opposition leader for the appointment of Chairman NAB.

Dar apprised the opposition leader about the court’s orders and emphasized the need for immediate appointment of Chairman NAB according to the directions of the apex court.

The finance minister said that the Prime Minister is expecting the names of two candidates from him and that they need to expedite the process of appointing the NAB chairman, following the Supreme Court’s orders.

It is pertinent to mention that two months ago in a letter, the prime minister had proposed two names — Justice (retd) Rehmat Hussain Jaffrey and Khawaja Zaheer — for the post of Chairman NAB. In response, the opposition leader proposed Justice (retd) Mamoon Qazi and Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan. However, Justice (retd) Mamoon declined the offer.

Later, the opposition leader proposed the name of former Chairman Federal Public Service Commission Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwandas but he too declined the offer.
