PTI announces to stage 'Dharna Conventions' across country

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced to stage ‘Dharna Conventions’ across the country as a part of its renewed efforts to press the federal government to form a judicial commission to probe alleged rigging in 2013 general elections.

In a statement, the PTI spokesman said that the ‘Dharna Convention’ will be held in Karachi on February 1, Lahore on February 8 and Peshawar on February 15

Earlier in a press conference in Islamabad on Monday, the PTI Chairman Imran Khan announced that his party would hold a dharna convention on January 18.

Imran Khan said that the party would announce its next course of action at the convention.

The PTI leader said that if a proper investigation was not undertaken into alleged rigging in the 2013 General Elections, his party would once again lead protests in the country.

“If an impartial judicial commission is not setup, we will take to the streets,” Imran Khan said.

PAT announces to launch countrywide protests

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) led by Dr Tahirul Qadri has also announced to launch countrywide protests against Model Town tragedy that left 14 party workers dead in clashes with police in June 2014.

In a statement, the PAT leader Raheeq Abbasi said that the party will start its countrywide protest demonstrations from Lahore on January 17.

“We have showed so much patience on the tragedy, we will avenge the bloodshed of martyrs,” Abbasi said.

Last year, thousands of protesters of the PTI and the PAT took to the streets and staged their separate sit-ins in Islamabad, seeking the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over allegations of corruption and vote rigging in the May 2013 polls.

However, later the PAT decided to end its sit-in in the federal government but Imran Khan-led PTI continued its sit-in for 126 days till it had to bring it to an end following the December 16 Peshawar army school tragedy.
