Polling in KPK LB elections under way

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The polling for local bodies elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ended on Saturday to elect 41,762 candidates after a gap of 10 years.

The polling began at 08:00 am and continued till 05:00 pm without any break.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa LB elections at village and neighbourhood councils were held on non-party basis whereas on party basis at tehsil and district council level.

A total of 84,420 candidates were in the run for 41,762 seats for village, neighbourhood, district and tehsil councils across the province.

The Provincial Election Commission had set up 11,211 polling stations including 3,059 for female in 24 districts of the province except Kohistan. Out of which 2,968 polling stations were declared as most sensitive and 4,371 as sensitive for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local bodies elections.

Extraordinary security measures had been taken to ensure peaceful atmosphere on the polling stations. However, there were reports of minor clashes among workers of different political parties in different parts of the province.

The polling remained suspended at several polling stations in Mardan, Charsadda, Nowshera, Hangu, Kohat, Karak,Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Kulachi. In Charsadda, 15 people were arrested for creating law and order situation at Umarzai polling station.

Meanwhile, 15 candidates boycotted the election in Bannu alleging irregularities in the polling.
