PEMRA committee suspends licences of Geo News, Geo Entertainment & Geo Tez

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) committee on Tuesday recommended canceling the licences of three television channels owned by the Geo TV network including Geo News, Geo Entertainment and Geo Tez, media reports said.

However, a final decision on the cancellation of the licences will be announced after another session of the committee on May 28, which will also be attended by government representatives.

The committee also decided that Geo TV offices also be immediately sealed.

The three-member committee including Syed Ismail Shah, Pervez Rathore and Israr Abbasi was constituted to review an application filed by the ministry of defence against Geo TV network for leveling allegations against an intelligence agency of Pakistan.

PEMRA disowns members’ decision to suspend Geo TV licences

The PEMRA disowned the decisions announced by its three members regarding the cancellation of Geo TV channels’ licenses.

In a statement, the PEMRA clarified that Tuesday’s (May 20) meeting was called without following the laid down procedures which had no legal standing.
