Pakistan emphasizes to make D-8 forum more vibrant

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The two-day 36th Session of the D-8 Commission began in Islamabad on Thursday with Pakistan emphasizing the need to make the forum more vibrant, effective and energetic for the benefit of the member states.

In his address at the inaugural session, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi assured that Pakistan will play its due role in realizing the objectives of the organization agreed upon during the previous meetings.

The special assistant emphasized the need for early implementation on the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) as it will provide benefit to the member states to improve their economic activities.

During the two-day session, the D-8 Commissioners from member countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey will take stock of progress made in five priority areas namely trade, industry, agriculture, transportation and energy.

It will also consider recommendations made by the D-8 eminent persons group for making the organization more effective.

The meeting has also on its agenda issues including the next meeting of D-8 leaders and foreign ministers in addition to D-8’s external relations with the United Nations agencies following the grant of observer status to the organization at the UN.
