MIANWALI, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday that that more dams are required to be built in the country to save the population from the devastation of floods.

In his address to flood affected people in Isakhel town of Punjab’s Mianwali district on Saturday, the prime minister assured to take necessary steps to prevent floods in future.

The prime minister expressed grief and sorrow over the death and destruction caused by hill torrents in the Mianwali district. He said that steps will be taken to stop flooding in the area.

Sharif also announced that Rs1.3 billion will be spent to prevent flooding caused by hill torrents.

The premier said that the incumbent government is giving priority to the development of backward areas and bring them at par with the developed ones.

Nawaz Sharif said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project will pass through Mianwali which will generate employment opportunities and bring prosperity and development.

In addition, the prime minister also announced Rs200 million for the water scheme in Isakhel.

Earlier, the District Coordination Officer (DCO) Mianwali gave a detailed briefing to the prime minister on the destruction caused by floods in the area and the ongoing relief activities. He said that heavy rains and hill torrents affected 45 villages and a population of 55,000.

The DCO told that the flooding destroyed standing crops on 12,924 acres of land. He said that 11 relief camps were set up for the flood hit people while 2345 people were shifted to safer places. He said that 2,214 tents and 9,800 food packets were distributed amongst the affectees.
