KARACHI, Pakistan: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Kanwar Naveed Jameel has won the by-election in Karachi’s NA-246 constituency with 95,644 votes, according to official results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Imran Ismail of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) remained runner up with 24,821 votes while Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) candidate Rashid Naseem got the third position with 9,056 votes.
The by-election in NA-246 (Karachi-VIII) was held on Thursday to fill the seat, became vacant after the MQM’s Nabeel Gabol resigned from the National Assembly in February 2015.
In an announced made early on Friday by a returning officer for the by-poll in NA-246 Syed Nadim Haider, it was stated that a total of 131,418 votes were cast in the NA- 246 by-poll out of which 1,129 votes were rejected.
The returning officer further said that the total turnover of the by-poll was at 36.72 per cent.
Talking to media, the PTI Vice President Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that his party secured less vote in NA-246 by-poll but it’s a part of a political process and we will improve in next elections
Qureshi said that the PTI took part in NA-246 to present ourselves as a political alternative to Karachiites.
