Japan likely to hold parliament elections in mid-December

TOKYO, Japan: Japan is likely to hold parliamentary elections on December 14 as the country’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced on Tuesday.

Talking to media representatives, the Japanese prime minister said that he would dissolve the current parliament on November 21.

The Japanese premier also plans to delay a planned but unpopular increase in sales tax.

The East Asian country was to hold parliamentary elections after two years as per schedule; however, as announced by the premier now it is going to happen ahead of schedule.

It is expected that Abe will win the parliamentary elections and secure another four-year term because the country’s current opposition is lacking unity.

Abe, who also heads the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected as the Japanese prime minister in December 2012 claiming that he would revive the economy but has not been able to do so.
