Foreign funding being brought under tighter scrutiny: FO

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Foreign Office has said that any foreign funding by private individuals and organizations to private entities in Pakistan through informal channels regardless of the source and country are being brought under tighter scrutiny in the anti-terror national action plan.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said that the purpose of bringing such funding under tighter scrutiny is ‘to choke off any possibility of financing for terrorists and terrorist organizations’.

Her statement came in response to a question regarding the statement issued by the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Islamabad on financial assistance.

“A section of the media has been propagating a false impression that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is funding the extremist mindset in Pakistan through its financial support for religious seminaries,” a press statement issued by the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Islamabad on Monday said.

The spokesperson further said that Saudi Arabia has been making important contribution to Pakistan’s economic development.

Tasneem Aslam said that offers of economic assistance and project based assistance by Saudi Arabia are processed by the ministry of foreign affairs in consultation with the relevant departments and agencies of the government of Pakistan.
