Defence minister seeks enhanced penalty on Geo

ISLAMABAD: The defence ministry is not satisfied with the penalty awarded to Geo and Jang media group by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the federal minister for defence Khawaja Asif said on Saturday.

His statement came a day after the PEMRA suspended the license issued to Geo News for a period of 15 days and also imposed a penalty of Rs 10 million on a complaint filed by the defence ministry.

In a statement on Saturday, the defence minister said that the ministry reserves the right to file an appeal for an enhanced penalty.

The defence minister further said that the ministry of defense is fully prepared to defend the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the court of law.

The media group served a legal notice on the defence ministry, the ISI and the PEMRA on Friday for defaming and maligning the group by accusing it of working on an anti-Pakistan agenda.

The group also asked all these to publicly apologise within 14 days and pay damages of Rs50 billion
