South AsiaBangladesh to have its first nuclear power plant

DHAKA: Bangladesh will have its first nuclear power plant with the help of Russia as the Asian country needs to settle the problem of acute power shortages and the construction of a facility of such a scale will also boost the development of transportation, building facilities and tertiary sectors.

The nuclear power plant project worth two billion dollars will be established at Rooppur, some 210 kilometres northwest of the capital of Dhaka

A foundation stone laying ceremony for plant is due at Rooppur later this Wednesday.

The Russia’s ROSATOM nuclear state corporation said that pre-construction activities are expected to begin next January, while the main phase of construction will start in 2015 to last for some five years.

The Rooppur nuclear power plant will start active operation in the early 2020s. It will consist of two generating units of 1,000 megawatts each.
