Afghan president calls on Taliban to join peace process

BEIJING, China: The Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai has called on the Taliban to join peace process, insisting that peace is the highest priority of the Afghan government.

In his address at a conference on Afghan peace and reconstruction in Beijing on Friday, the Afghan president did not make any specific proposals to the Taliban group for joining the reconciliation process.

The Afghan president that the government forces would not back away from the fight.

President Ghani said that the Taliban should join and enter the political dialogue in a bid to bring peace and stability in the country.

The president also called on international community and partners of Afghanistan to support the Afghan-led and Afghan-own peace process.

The fourth Ministerial Conference of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process began at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Friday to focus on the regional cooperation on Afghanistan.

The theme of the conference is “Deepening Cooperation for Sustainable Security and Prosperity of the ‘Heart of Asia’ Region.”

The Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process – comprising 14 member countries and supported by 16 countries and 12 regional and international organizations – is part of international efforts to help the process of Afghanistan’s stabilization through regional cooperation.
