LAHORE, Pakistan: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday ordered to release the supermodel Ayyan Ali after accepting her bail plea in the currency smuggling case.
However, the jail superintendent Malik Mushtaq has said that it is unlikely that the model will be released today while according to her counsel Latif Khosa, Ayyan Ali will be set free from jail on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Ayyan Ali is under police custody at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since March 14 when customs officials arrested her at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport for attempting to carry US $500,000 abroad.
Her trial continues to be carried out at a customs court in Rawalpindi and since inception, Ayyan Ali’s judicial remand has been extended 16th times. Her two previous bail applications filed separately in the LHC and the customs courts were also rejected.
But on Tuesday, a two-member bench of the LHC accepted her fresh bail plea, ordering immediate release of the accused in the currency smuggling case.
The supermodel has claimed that she did not intend to go abroad with the foreign currency found in her luggage. She says that she received the money after selling some of her properties and at the airport, she was attempting to hand it over to her brother before boarding a Dubai-bound plane.
