LAHORE: The 2nd death anniversary of Shahenshah-e-Ghazal (‘King of Ghazal) Mehdi Hassan is being observed with respect on Friday.

In this connection, a memorial reference will be held at Al-Hamra Art Center in Lahore today.

Meanwhile, the Lahore Arts Council will pay a musical tribute to the legend singer in a special evening on June 20 in which his son Arif Mehdi and prominent pupils will perform.

Mehdi Hassan – born on July 18, 1927 in a village called Luna, Rajasthan in Jhunjhunu district in India into a family of traditional musicians – received numerous awards and recognitions for his performances including Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, the Pride of Performance, and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

Besides Nigar Film and Graduate Awards from Pakistan, he was recipient of the Saigal Award in the Indian city of Jalandhar in 1979 and the Gorkha Dakshina Bahu Award in Nepal in 1983.
