Election tribunal disqualifies PTI MNA Rai Hassan Nawaz

MULTAN, Pakistan: An election tribunal in Multan on Tuesday disqualified the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) lawmaker in the National Assembly Rai Hassan Nawaz for deliberately not disclosing assets to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Rai Hassan Nawaz was elected member of the National Assembly as the PTI’s candidate from NA-162 constituency in Cheecha Watni in May 2013 general elections.

Rai Hassan had won the election from NA-162 by securing more than 88,000 votes whereas his main opponent Haji Muhammad Ayub of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had bagged over 75,000 votes.

Later Muhammad Ayub filed a petition in the election tribunal, arguing that Rai Hassan Nawaz did not disclose his complete assets.

The tribunal after hearing the case declared that all charges against Rai Hassan Nawaz have been proved and he stands disqualified for holding any public office.

The tribunal ordered re-election in the constituency within 90 days for the seat and also imposed a lifetime ban on Rai Hasan Nawaz from contesting general elections.
