Monitoring Desk: In a significant diplomatic engagement, Ambassador of Pakistan to Russia, Faisal Tirmizi, met with Governor of Irkutsk Oblast, Igor Kobzev, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties and the exploration of new cooperative ventures.
The meeting, held at the Governor’s residence in Irkutsk, focused on deepening economic and trade relations between Pakistan and the resource-rich Siberian region.
During the discussions, Ambassador Tirmizi highlighted the immense potential for collaboration in key sectors, including energy, agriculture, and trade. He emphasized Pakistan’s interest in leveraging Irkutsk’s expertise in heavy industry and natural resource extraction, while also exploring avenues for Russian investment in Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs).
Governor Kobzev welcomed the Ambassador, noting the long-standing history of friendly relations between the two nations. He expressed a keen interest in expanding cultural and educational exchanges, as well as boosting direct trade links. The Governor specifically pointed to opportunities for cooperation in the supply of minerals, timber, and fertilizers to Pakistan, and the potential for importing Pakistani agricultural products, particularly rice and citrus fruits, to the region.
“The potential for mutual growth is vast,” the Governor was quoted as stating. “We are ready to facilitate business-to-business contacts and create a favorable environment for joint ventures.”
Ambassador Tirmizi echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of regional connectivity. He also discussed the role of the ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) and other multilateral platforms in fostering greater integration. The two officials agreed to work towards forming a joint working group to identify specific projects and facilitate direct interaction between the business communities of Pakistan and the Irkutsk region. The meeting marks a continuation of the positive momentum in Pakistan-Russia relations, which have seen a steady increase in high-level visits and trade volume in recent years.
