ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: More than 200 people died while around 1000 sustained injuries in different part of Pakistan when a strong earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale jolted the South Asian region on Monday.

The US Geological Survey estimated the earthquake to be a 7.5 on the Richter scale, 256 kilometers north of Kabul Afghanistan. However, according to Pakistan Meteorological Department, the magnitude of the earthquake was 8.1 and its epicenter was Hindukush region.

The areas in Pakistan which were jolted by the earthquake included Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The mobile service in some parts of the country was affected due to tremors while several houses and buildings collapsed.

The tremors were also felt in parts of neighboring India and Afghanistan.
