PESHAWRA/QUETTA, Pakistan: Two more polio cases have emerged in Peshawar and Quetta after which the number of such cases reported in the country this year has reached 35.
The sources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department said that the fresh polio case was witnessed in Sheikhan rural area of Peshawar where a one-year old girl Kainat was diagnosed with polio virus.
They said that the after the emergency of this case in Peshawar, a total of nine polio cases have been confirmed in the Provincial Capital while 14 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the current year.
Separately, a new case of crippling polio disease was also confirmed in a child in Quetta on Tuesday.
The Polio Emergency Control Room’s sources said that the latest case was found in three-year-old boy Naqeebullah who is the resident of Killi Barak Zai at Eastern Bypass in Quetta.
The sources said that the number of polio cases has risen to six by this case in Balochistan including four in Quetta, one in Loralai and one in Killa Abdullah districts during 2015.
Last year, a total of 306 polio cases were reported across the country.
Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only two countries in the world where polio remains endemic. Earlier, Nigeria was also in the United Nations list of countries where polio existed but recently the World Health Organization (WHO) said that Nigeria and Africa as a whole are now closer to be certified polio-free.
