ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has imposed a ban on appointment and transfer of officers in Punjab and Sindh as the two provinces are set to hold first phase of local government elections next month.

The decision was taken at the ECP meeting held in Islamabad on Monday at which matters pertaining to conduct of local government elections in Punjab and Sindh provinces were discussed.

In his remarks during the meeting, the Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza assured that electoral code of conduct will be implemented in letter and spirit for the holding of free and fair local government elections in the two provinces.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Sindh and high-ranking police officials.

Later briefing the media after the meeting in Islamabad, the Secretary Election Commission Babar Yaqub said that a ban has been imposed on appointment and transfer of officers in Punjab and Sindh.

Yaqub said that the commission has so far not received any written request for deployment of Rangers in the local government elections.

The local government elections in Punjab and Sindh will take place in three phases. The first phase will be held on October 31, the second on November 19 and the third on December 3.
